Job Description
A Speech Therapist is responsible for providing high-quality speech and language therapy services to clients within community settings (nursing homes, day rehab centers, or home-based care). The goal is to maximize functional communication and safe swallowing (dysphagia management) to enhance the quality of life and independence of clients/residents, including caregiver training where required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assessment & Diagnosis: Conduct comprehensive evaluations for clients/residents with communication disorders (aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia) and swallowing difficulties, often resulting from stroke, dementia, or neurological conditions.
- Intervention Planning: Develop and implement person-centered therapy plans that align with the client's/resident's lifestyle and the caregiver's capacity.
- Dysphagia Management: Perform bedside swallow screenings and assessments. Recommend appropriate food textures and fluid consistencies to prevent aspiration.
- Caregiver Empowerment: Train family members and domestic helpers on communication strategies and safe feeding techniques.
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with doctors, nurses, other allied health professionals to ensure a holistic approach to the client's/resident's well-being.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate, timely clinical records and provide reports for functional status reviews or funding requirements.
- Staff training and development: Develop training materials and resources and conduct training for therapists, support staff and care partners
- Service and quality improvement: Assist to conduct quality improvement/research projects

Qualification
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Speech Therapy / Speech-Language Pathology.
- Full registration with Allied Health Professional Council (AHPC)
Requirements:
- Strong clinical knowledge in adult dysphagia and neurogenic communication disorders.
- High empathy, patience, adaptable and resourceful.
- Ability to work independently in various home environments and community settings.
